Deadline for the III International Uuno Klami Composition Competition fast approaching

The deadline for the III International Uuno Klami Composition Competition, which has elicited an enthusiastic reception, is fast approaching: entries must reach the competition office by 2.12.2013 at the latest. The competition’s positive image has clearly spread abroad and favourable comments about the importance of the competition and all it offers have come in from all over the world, from composers and other professionals in the field of music.

The competition is open to citizens of a Nordic country, of an EU Member State or of Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Moldavia, Monaco, Montenegro, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Switzerland, Ukraine or the Vatican City State. The members of the Jury are leading composers and music educators of their generation: Finnish composers Kalevi Aho and Magnus Lindberg, Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür, and as the conductor member Yasuo Shinozaki, Artistic Director of the Kymi Sinfonietta. The distinguished Jury will announce the names of the competition finalists in early spring 2014.

The competition has aroused great interest in the international community: numerous enquiries have been received from all over the world – even more than for the previous competition, the II International Uuno Klami Composition Competition that evoked a record response. Judging from the previous competition, the number of entries received by the competition office is expected to peak just before the deadline, in early December. The competition has received particular praise for its distinguished Jury and its prizes: I prize €11,000, II prize €9,000 and III prize €7,000.

The works chosen for the finals and their composers will appear before a large audience in a unique way in autumn 2014, when they will be performed by the Kymi Sinfonietta at two concerts, in Kouvola and Kotka, under its Artistic Director, conductor Yasuo Shinozaki. The finals will attract an international band of composers to the Kymenlaakso region of SE Finland. Both the finalists and the members of the Jury will personally attend the finals concerts and their orchestral rehearsals. Also unique in this competition is the fact that the Jury will not make its final decision until it has heard the finals concerts and their rehearsals. Their decisions will thus be based on several hearings.

The aim of the Uuno Klami Composition Competition is to highlight and promote contemporary European music and the work of composers under the name of Uuno Klami (1900–1961), himself a cosmopolitan composer in his day. A native of Kymenlaakso, he was the most successful Finnish composer of his generation. The aim of the competition is to actively enhance recognition of his life’s work both in Finland and internationally.
