The Uuno Klami Composition Competition


The II International Uuno Klami Composition Competition, held in Kotka and Kouvola on September 18 & 19, 2009 was a success. 186 works from 27 countries participated in the competition. The members of the jury were composers Anders Eliasson and Magnus Lindberg, and Yasuo Shinozaki, Chief Conductor of the Kymi Sinfonietta, The chairman of the jury was the Vice-President of the Uuno Klami Society, composer Kalevi Aho.

Four works were heard in the finals: the Toccata concertante for piano and orchestra by Victor Alcántara (Germany), The Stalingrad Madonna for mezzo-soprano and orchestra by Kent Olofsson (Sweden), the Drei Orchesterstücke by Joachim Schneider (Germany) and the Double Concerto for Flute, Guitar and Orchestra by Oliver Waespi (Switzerland).

Schneider’s Drei Orchesterstücke was chosen as the winner. The second prize was shared by Olofsson and Waespi, and Alcántar came in third place. The work by Alcántara also won the audience prize.

Through its concerts, recordings and as the orchestra of the Uuno Klami Composition Competition, the vibrant Kymi Sinfonietta has become a major promoted of the music of Uuno Klami.
